[dropcap=”circle”]One of the oldest churches in Ashton on Mersey is asking for your help to photograph or paint a picture of the historic church.

St Martin’s Church in Church Lane, wants to revive an old tradition of featuring the church on a postcard.

‘’It’s a brilliant church, with some wonderful views, but we don’t have any official full colour paintings or photographs, we could use,” says the Reverend Shaun Conlon.

This is the earliest photograph of St Martin's. It was taken in 1880 before the new clock tower was built.

”So we are appealing to the people of Ashton, and Sale, for help. We are running a competition to find  a picture we can use as a postcard.

“We believe the earliest postcard dates back to the 1880s, and shows the church before the tower was added. However, there hasn’t been a postcard made since the 1950s,’’ said the Reverend Conlon.

‘’It’s a very old church, and we have some graves dating back to the 17th century and we are looking for an image that captures the essence of the church and its history.”

People are invited to send a photograph, painting or drawing of the church, containing no images of people, on A4 photo quality paper, and marked with their name, address and telephone number, to St Martin’s Rectory, 367 Glebelands Road, Sale. The winner will have their name credited on the postcard featuring their picture. We will publish the winning entry on Sale Today.
