Sharon Richards, knew what she had to do when she developed serious health problems. She told a story to cheer herself up.

It was the start of a club, which has revived the art of storytelling in the North West.

Sharon, from Urban Road, Sale, who had give up her job as a clinical psychologist, through illness, now runs The Success Stories Club for storytellers. ”When I was ill I went to a storytelling session in Manchester and told a story, and that was me, hooked.  I decided to invite storytellers and run my own club.”

They meet every month at the Moorfield Hotel, on Marsland Road, in Sale. ‘’I describe it as the world’s friendliest club…Everyone has a story to tell – some are happy stories, some are sad, some provoke, and some have the power to move you.

“ The spoken word is very compelling. In this modern world we have forgotten the essence of a good story. Its all about communicating with each other. People come here to lose themselves in words and their imagination.”

“We have storytellers, performance poets, singers, musicians, even jugglers, and the curious. You just never know who is going to turn up. We are the only club in the North West which offers such variety.”

‘’We are not like a traditional storytelling club relying on the past,” says Sharon. “We are very relevant and encourage people to talk about things the matter to them as well as stories that can inform, and entertain. We have themed nights with a different topic at each session. At the end of the evening the audience has a vote for the best storyteller.”

The Success Stories Club also has been actively involved in putting on performances for the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity in Sale’s Amphora Café.

‘’It was a sold out performance, and we had some great storytellers giving their stories.”

The next club night at the Moorfield Hotel is on May 16th, and the theme is ‘Humour’.
