Ashton on Mersey school is celebrating a double first….with old boy Danny Drinkwater, and current student Marcus Rashford being selected for the England football team for the European Championships which begin on June 10th.
Roy Hodgson, the England manager, announced his squad of twenty six players that will be reduced to twenty three players on May 30th.
Danny Drinkwater’s season at Leicester has been outstanding. He is one of three ex-United players in the Leicester team, who all went to Ashton on Mersey school, Danny Simpson, and Matty James all completed their education there.
Danny has this message which he tweeted for all his fans:
Honour to be selected for the 26-man @England squad! Looking forward to meeting up with the lads. pic.twitter.com/ST7Vr5VYyW
Drinkwater, the Leicester City midfield dynamo and former Manchester United youth team and Academy player had been widely tipped to make the squad, but the choice of the eighteen year old Marcus Rashford, took many soccer pundits by surprise.
Marcus has attended Ashton on Mersey school since he was twelve. He is one of a number of Manchester United apprentices and Academy players to attend the school. Marcus has played in the last sixteen matches for United, notably scoring in the defeat against Manchester City.
A host of budding players have studied there while on the club’s books, including Barcelona centre-back Gerard Piqué, West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans, Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross and Norwich midfielder Robbie Brady, as well as winger Jesse Lingard, one of the influx of young players given regular games under manager Louis van Gaal this season.
