Metrolink is celebrating Armed Forces Day and as a gesture its granting free travel for life for servicemen and women and veterans on the trams.
Its joined forces with a national scheme which recognises the military’s contribution to the country. Armed Forces Day events for Greater Manchester is taking place in St Peter’s Square, where Metrolink’s new stop is expected to open later this summer. Organised by Manchester council, the free events take place until 4pm.
Coun Andrew Fender, chairman of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “There are a number of poignant military anniversaries this year, all of which underline the debt the nation has to our Armed Forces, so it was right that Metrolink should join other transport bodies in offering this small token of our appreciation.”
First Manchester will also offer free bus journeys for servicemen and women today to help them travel to events.
