More misery for motorists on Manchester Road from Monday

Monday’s commute along Washway Road could be more miserable than ever in rush hour traffic as the next stage of work on Manchester Road gets underway. A further one-lane system will be in place as part of the ongoing £1m road-widening scheme.

While the work is being carried out overnight there is expected to be some impact on motorists heading from Sale to Altrincham and from Sale to Manchester throughout the day.

But OneTrafford, the Trafford Council/Amey PLC partnership overseeing the controversial project, say it’s the last but one phase in the work and the whole project should be completed by the end of August.

The controversial project has caused traffic chaos close to the junction with Park Road for many months, especially after the introduction of a one-lane system back in March.

And police are still investigating whether the roadworks had anything to do with the tragic collision that cost the life of 25-year-old Helena Thurm last month.

OneTrafford say the next phase of work will add a pedestrian island north of Park Road while works to widen the carriageway will be completed on the south eastern footway of Manchester Road, opposite the Toyota dealership.

While these works are being carried out, traffic will be restricted to one lane in either direction along Manchester Road.

A spokesperson for OneTrafford said: “We understand that road works can be frustrating and would like to assure motorists and residents that we are doing everything we can to complete the works quickly and safely.

“We expect the junction improvement works and associated resurfacing to be finished by the end of August.”

OneTrafford says that once complete, the project will deliver a number of long-term benefits such as “safer pedestrian crossings and swifter journeys for motorists”
