Sale Grammar has claimed the second spot for the whole of Greater Manchester in the The Real Schools Guide to state secondaries, which is published this week.
The school which has an entrance exam and is therefore a selective school – moved up five places from seventh last year .
The top place for both Greater Manchester AND England was awarded to Altrincham Grammar School for Girls which has Sale pupils among it’s students.
The Real Schools Guide 2016, compiled by Trinity Mirror’s data unit, claims to give a far more comprehensive picture than traditional league tables.
It takes into account 25 different sets of data, including not just GCSE results but factors like value-added scores, pupil-teacher ratios and absence rates.
It is published as a print product but parents can also go online to browse the full data, compare different schools, and find links to contact details and recent Ofsted reports.
Sale Grammar School came second overall in Manchester, a rise of five places since last year’s report but it also improved significantly in the national tables from 127th last year to 83 this year.

Ashton on Mersey school is non selective and has both girls and boys on their roll. They also have a relatively high number of children with SEND – special educational needs and disabilities – requirements. Recently they became embroiled in a row with parents of SEND pupils who are due to start in September, saying they did not have the resources to cope with anymore special needs pupils.
They wanted to bus them out to Broadoak School in Partington. After increased funding from Trafford Borough Council, the new children will be able to stay on the premises.
They managed to ease into the top ten for Manchester this year, reaching number nine, retaining their four star status.
