All hands to the pump! Magical pictures from yesteryear…

Posing proudly – never dreaming they would appear on something called social media – we present the firemen of Sale and Ashton on Mersey in 1900 and 1914 courtesy of Trafford Archives

It was all hands to the pump in those days. Life was so much simpler then – the only tweet you could hear came from our feathered friends, – but as these pictures show, the tradition of service and sacrifice was self-evident even then.

They appear in a twitter release from the Trafford Archives, who have many pictures and memories to share.

WALTON PARK WIMPY MEMORIAL: A new war memorial has been unveiled in Walton Park, to commemorate the aircrew who crash-landed there on the third of August 1943, killing two Australian airmen.

The memorial reads:

In honour of the allied airmen whose aircraft crashed on this site 3rd August 1943
