Josh Beaumont says he can’t wait to return to action tonight, as the Sharks take on Edinburgh in the final pre-season friendly at Heywood Road
Beaumont hasn’t played since 20th February after injuring his shoulder at Sixways against Worcester Warriors when he was on the verge of a full England call up.
He said: “I’m massively excited to be back playing, it’s been six long months of rehab. I must thank the Sharks backroom team who have helped me back to full fitness. There’ll be a few nerves before I arrive at the ground but I just can’t wait to get back into action.”
Looking at the game against Edinburgh Beaumont added: “It will be a tougher test this week. We have treated this week as an in-season week. Last week we trained hard up until the game, and we managed to get a big result. But we’re treating this week like the build up to a Premiership game – short & sharp. It’s been really good and we’re looking forward to a tough contest against a quality Pro 12 side.”
One former Shark who Beaumont may face is Viliami Fihaki, but Beaumont is purely focusing on his own performance: “I know Vili really well, and he is a great lad. He’ll be coming down here to prove a point.
“The main focus is on ourselves and our performance leading into the first game of the season away to Newcastle Falcons, we’re focussing on what we want to do, and hopefully we can score a few more tries and to defend as well as we did last weekend.”
The Full Squad is for the game, which kicks off at 7pm, is : Byron McGuigan, Paulo Odogwu, Charlie Ingall, Will Addison, Jonny Leota, Sam Bedlow, Sam James, Nick Scott, Nev Edwards, AJ MacGinty, Dan Mugford, Peter Stringer, James Mitchell, Mike Phillips, Ross Harrison, Eifion Lewis Roberts, James Flynn, Neil Briggs, Rob Webber, Curtis Langdon, Halani Aulika, Keiran Longbottom, Brian Mujati, Jonathan Mills, George Nott, Lou Reed, Andrei Ostrikov, Cameron Neild, David Seymour, TJ Ioane, Magnus Lund, Josh Beaumont, and Lawrence Pearce.
Steve Diamond said, “The players did well last weekend against Fylde but we need to continue the momentum against Edinburgh who are a good Pro 12 side.
“This is our final warm up game so all the players will get some game time and places are up for grabs for the opening Aviva Premiership game at Newcastle Falcons in a fortnight’s time.
”The whole squad have worked hard in pre-season and are all hungry for game time. They all want to be included in the 23 at Newcastle.”
