St Peter’s Square opens after 14 months of commuter disruption

Some good news for the weary tram commuter today because after 14 months of disruption the St Peter’s Square stop on the Altrincham line has finally opened.

BBC North West Tonight is reporting the line has opened and their pictures show bigger, covered platforms further up the Square.

The operators, Transport for Greater Manchester,  say the re-opening means twin track services running through the Square and across the city for the first time in nine weeks.

The work  on transforming the St Peter’s Square stop is part of Manchester City Council’s redevelopment of the area.  This video on the TfGM site illustrates what has been happening.

During those 14 months the new-look stop has been moved towards the northern end of the Square, near the relocated Cenotaph.  There are now two new island platforms and two sets of twin track.

The aim, say TfGM,  is to cope with more frequent services across the tram network when the Second City Crossing opens next year.

That project will see trams running through the city from St. Peter’s to Victoria.  Work is underway on the line.
