What a remarkable year this is turning out to be for Sale Golf Club. They have won the prestigious Archie Preston Trophy for the first time in the Club’s history.

The Manchester and District Golf Association trophy was won by a team from Sale, after a nail-biting extra hole finish.

So far it has been a thrilling year for Sale Golf Club, with the Ladies section winning the Mersey Shield earlier this year and the Men’s 1st and 2nd teams retaining the Mersey League.

Over 80 golf clubs competed in this year’s Archie Preston Trophy with the final being held at Pleasington Golf Club against a very strong Tytherington side.

Captain of Sale, David Moore, put Sale’s victory down to a tremendous team spirit and ‘never say die’ attitude, after difficult ‘last ditch’ away victories in both the quarter and semi finals.

Sale were triumphant 4 – 3 yesterday following a ‘nail biting’ extra hole finish, making them the first club in the Mersey Valley to win the Archie Preston Trophy since the competition was introduced over 20 years ago.

It’s a fantastic achievement, and there is a real sense of  pride and satisfaction running through the Club today.

The Archie Preston Trophy was introduced about 25 years ago as part of the Manchester and District Golf Alliance Summer Knock Out Competitions.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance was formed 1924 and according to their website is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the Country with 114  affiliated clubs across Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire
