Sale Sharks have named their side to take on Leicester Tigers at the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Steve Diamond has made one enforced change and one tactical change to the side which secured a dramatic draw against Worcester Warriors last weekend. Mike Philips starts at scrum-half, replacing the injured Peter Stringer, with James Mitchell coming on the bench and Ross Harrison makes his first start of the season, coming into replace Eifion Lewis-Roberts.
Sale Sharks: 15. Byron McGuigan, 14. Nev Edwards, 13. Will Addison, 12. Johnny Leota, 11. Paolo Odogwu, 10. AJ MacGinty, 9. Mike Phillips, 1. Ross Harrison, 2. Neil Briggs, 3. Kieran Longbottom, 4. Bryn Evans, 5. Jonathan Mills, 6. Cameron Neild, 7. David Seymour, 8. Josh Beaumont (c)
Replacements: 16. Eifion Lewis-Roberts, 17. Halani Aulika, 18. Andrei Ostrikov, 19. Laurence Pearce, 20. Magnus Lund, 21. James Mitchell, 22. Dan Mugford, 23. Sam Bedlow
Speaking ahead of the game, Diamond said: “They are a great side and a great club, they are always there or thereabouts at the top of the table. The lads know what is required of them for the game. Games between us are usually very entertaining, full bloodied encounters and I expect the same will be served up on Saturday.”
The Stadium will be transformed to host a family friendly fun-fair, with pre and post-match activities, including live music, face-painting, bouncy castles, and activities for all the family to enjoy in the Shark Marquee.
First team players will mingle with the crowds in the build up to the match, which kicks off at 2.30pm and will be Sale’s biggest match of the season so far.
Leicester Tigers have won all their away games, and will prove a tough test to the Sharks ambitions for the rest of the Aviva Premiership. There is always an exciting undercurrent to Sale and the Tigers matches – they are always explosive and entertaining encounters and expect the fireworks to come early before Bonfire Night, as the Sharks go looking for that all important home win.
Director of Rugby Steve Diamond said: ” Our 34 – 34 draw last week against Worcester typified our inconsistent start to the season so far; some great moments in attack and some howlers in defence. The staff and players have been working hard to attain the high performance levels we are accustomed to.”
The Sharks squad must be on their mettle and take on the Tigers formidable forwards as the Sale second row, Jonathan Mills reveals:”Leicester have a very big forward pack, so if we can match them up front that will go a long way to winning the game.”
Mills made his ninetieth appearance for the club in last week’s game. He says: “It’s simple really. If we do what we’re good at, get some possession, get some early points on the board and play well, there’s no reason why we can’t win the game.”
Jonathan says performing and securing victory will also be dependent on the much finer details that he feels have let his side down at times in recent weeks.
“We need to make sure we get ourselves in order. We need to work on handling errors and missed tackles – if we improve those aspects then it doesn’t matter who we’re playing because on our day we’ll beat them. That’s our aim this weekend.”
