Police say that reports of a bogus official asking Sale residents about crime statistics in the area, were a case of mistaken identity. The man is actually working for the Office of National Statistics and police have withdrawn their warnings about him.
A GMP spokesman said:”Further to our recent post regarding a bogus caller carrying out crime prevention surveys on Walton Road in Sale. We have made enquires and can confirm he wasn’t bogus, he was completing surveys on behalf of the Office of National Statistics.
”Letters were posted out to homes approximately 3 weeks ago, notifying residents they would be receiving a caller to complete the survey. The caller will be carrying ID and a copy of the letter.
”Thank you to all who reported this to us, and please do continue to remain vigilant.”
But police are warning people about two men in the Sale West area, saying they work for Barnados.
A spokesman for GMP said: ” We received a report of two males knocking on doors on Catterick Avenue in Sale asking for donations on behalf of Barnado’s Charity. The informant suspected this to be a scam after being asked for her bank details.
“We have made enquiries with the Barnardo’s Charity who have confirmed that this was not genuine as there were no agents in the area.
“Both males were white, wearing smart trousers, one of the males was wearing glasses. ”
The police spokesman gave this warning:”Always be mindful when opening the door to strangers and never do business with door to door Salespeople.”
