Josh Charnley has said he is determined to prove the doubters wrong, as he looks to make his debut on Friday night for Sale Sharks after switching codes from rugby league.
The Chorley-born winger has been at the Sharks for just over a week now, and he’s revealed he’s enjoyed his start at the club.
He said: “It’s been good. Meeting with the lads last Monday was good but different as I’ve been in the same environment for over 10 years at Wigan. It’s like going to a different school; you’re going into a new environment, meeting new people and learning something new!
“I wasn’t nervous on my first day, just excited really. It’s a challenge and I’m looking forward to it, I can’t wait to put on the shirt and play in front of the Sharks fans.”
Charnley said Steve Diamond was a key reason to why he decided to join the Sharks: “I was in talk with a few clubs, and a few of them said if I signed there I’d go missing in the A-League, and Steve said I wouldn’t and that was a key factor for me. He’s a big believer in me. That was a massive indicator that I was comfortable coming here.
“I need to prove people wrong, people have already written me off, it’s one of those where I need to go out there and do what I do.”
Charnley has already had some success at the AJ Bell Stadium this season, scoring a hat-trick for the Warriors, and it’s a pitch he is looking forward to calling home: “It’s a good stadium to play at. When I came here with Wigan, it had a good atmpsphere. Calling it my home now is great. Going in the home changing room instead of the away one will be different but it’s one of those stadiums I like playing at!”
Josh is hoping to make his debut in the Anglo-Welsh Cup match with Wasps at the AJ Bell Stadium. The match kicks off at 8-15pm.
Josh bowed out as a Wigan Warriors player with an incredible record of having scored 165 tries in 176 games including the winning try against Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
During his time at Wigan Josh won two Grand Finals and a Challenge Cup medal and was top try scorer in Super League in back to back seasons (2012 + 2013). In 33 appearances this season, Josh touched down 24 times.
Josh met up with Sale Sharks Ambassador and Commercial Director Mark Cueto who holds the all-time scoring record for the Premiership with 90 tries. On meeting up with Josh Mark joked, “Great to see you, are you after my record? I am sure you can do it!”
