Sale Sharks could face a legal challenge over their latest signing – Denny Solomona from Castleford Tigers.

The Rugby League player was contracted to Castleford until 2018, but didn’t turn up for pre-season training.  Solomona apparently ‘resigned’  from his contract with Tigers, with two years to go, and has made the break to sign a three year deal with Sale Sharks.

Now the Tigers have said they are prepared to take the issue to the High Court over the breach of contract. The Rugby Football League have held talks with the Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby, over the implications of the transfer.

Denny will add so much to the Sharks team.  He scored a record 42 tries in 29 games last season.  He is only 23, and can play as a winger or full back and centre.

It is hoped that Denny will form a formidable pairing with Josh Charnley, who signed for Sale Sharks from Wigan, this season, and  it gives Director of Rugby, Steve Diamond, attacking options in the backs or on the wing.

Diamond said, “We are delighted that Denny has signed for us. He is a great player with an eye for scoring tries and has the added bonus of having played Rugby Union in his time at School & College.”Denny was born in Auckland, New Zealand and played Rugby Union at College before joining the Melbourne Storm Youth Team  scoring 8 tries in 13 games before breaking his fibula.

Denny moved to the UK in 2014 and signed for London Broncos and scored 10 tries in 21 games but the team were relegated. He joined Castleford Tigers and scored 42 tries in 2016 breaking Lesley Vainikolo’s Super League record set in 2004.

Sale Sharks are aware that Castleford Tigers and the RFL may be looking into legal process and until this in finalised Denny will not be available for media interviews.

Despite the deal being done, Sale Today  understands that the likely outcome of the legal dispute may be Sale paying a `’compensation fee” to  Castleford for signing Solomona.

New Zealand-born Solomona, made his Samoa debut in a rugby league international against Fiji in October.
