Protests against the proposed cuts to Trafford Council’s School Crossing Patrol service are gathering momentum.   The latest demonstrations were staged outside Moorlands Junior School, in Temple Road, Sale,  this morning and afternoon,  with parents and families protesting about the proposal which would see school crossing patrols in Trafford being paid directly by schools or community groups or disappearing altogether.
The Council say they have to make savings  of around £22 million from the budget, and one way of clawing back money they say is to stop paying for Lollipop men and women centrally.

Labour Councillor Mike Freeman from Sale Moor Ward, gave his support to the demonstration, he said:” The Council should listen to the people and not risk the lives of children in the future. This proposal is utter madness.
‘It just shows the strength of feeling that this has aroused. Trafford Council says that it is looking at alternative ways of funding the Lollipop patrols. We all know that schools already have very stretched budgets and simply cannot to fund crossing.

Andy, the  Lollipop man who operates the school crossing patrol in Temple Road says he is worried about the future if the Council cuts get the go ahead. “I have been doing this job for three years.  I love doing my job, it is very rewarding and you feel a great sense of responsibility. You are there for the kids, and the adults.  Road safety is not something to gamble with.”

”And what everyone is forgetting – schools are prevented from doing so by School Finance Regulations. So it is actually illegal to ask school to do this.  That means the Council will be asking parents and local businesses to pay. We believe this is wrong – road safety is the responsibility of the Council. They must see senses and drop the proposals”

His call was backed by many parents attending the demonstration. One Mum said:”Can you imagine if we didn’t have a crossing at  Temple Road.  The safety implications for our children are just crazy. And why should schools have to pay for this. It rests with the Council – they are responsible for road safety.  They are elected by the people to serve the people – and road safety has to be paramount – not someone’s idea of a money saving scheme.”

The closing date for the petition is tomorrow December 16th and protestors are urging as many people as possible to sign it before then.  Click on https://democratic.trafford.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=71&RPID=983309&HPID=983309 if you want to add your name.
