A94-year-old man who was viciously attacked by intruders who broke into his home and stole petty cash he kept in a jar for hospital parking, died  two weeks ago.

The robbery at the man’s home in Priory Close, Sale,  happened on Sunday May 22 last year when two men broke in at around 4 am in the morning.

The pensioner was asleep but heard noises and went to investigate.  The men forced their way in and one of them grabbed the homeowner and hit him in the face.

He was then pushed to the ground and kicked by one man while the other searched the property.

They went through his belongings before eventually leaving with the contents of a glass jar  – cash which had been saved up to pay for hospital parking.  The elderly occupant was left lying on the floor.

He was taken to hospital a few days later with a life-threatening brain injury where he underwent three operations.   Police say he was later discharged and was recovering at home but he fell and died in hospital on February 10th.

Detective Inspector Carl Gilbert, of GMP’s Trafford borough said:”Firstly, I’d like to extend  my  condolences to the man’s family and my thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“This vile attack put this man through a horrific ordeal and left him hospital-bound with severe injuries.

“It’s deeply troubling that these offenders care more about a jar of petty cash than they did about the man’s welfare.

“There’s a chance that someone may have heard some commotion or seen the offenders flee the scene, if so, now is the time to come forward so we can provide some answers to his family.”

Both are described as white men wearing dark blue coats and gloves.  One is said to be around 5′ 7″ tall and the second 5’9″.

A post mortem is being held to ascertain the cause of death and in the meantime, Insp Gilbert is asking anyone with information to contact the police on 0161 856 7530 or ring the independent charity line, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
