Sad to say – but Jacks of Sale is no more….

IMG_7850-2

A piece of local history has closed its doors for the last time in Sale.

Jacks DIY store has ceased trading after fifty years.

We got thousands of hits and messages of support on the social media pages of Sale Today when we first reported the story at the beginning of March.

There was shock and outrage from the local community, who had grown up with the DIY  and hardware store as a constant reminder that “small is beautiful”.

”You didn’t need to go to a big DIY warehouse to find something. Jacks had it all, and if they didn’t it would arrive as if by magic with the next delivery. I am really sad that it has gone. Its a sign of the times I guess, but what a sign of the times…A little piece of history has gone.” said one Facebook user.

The sign says it all…

There’s been a lot social media activity generated by Sale Today users. We reprint a selection of their comments below:-

Ben Flay Sad remember it well used it a lot very handy for bits and projects great staff
Helen Hassall Cheaper stores have taken over but none will replace a fully functioning DIY shop. Also B and Q has gone. Shopping habits have changed. Shame ?
Garry Whitehurst Since they retired and the business was taken over it has been on the cards. It wasn’t just a DIY shop it was about the guys that owned and ran it, sadly they retired and the demise started almost immediately.
Pauline Mary Gibbons It was part of my childhood.
Mary Macleod Really is sad to see this closing down. It has been apart of Sale for ever, and you could always get everything you ever wanted in there for your DIY jobs and lots more….
David Henshall-Jones I think gone are the days of people being productive and a bit more hands on with things at home. I think people these days don’t have the time to DIY, or don’t have the skills to DIY. I’m glad to say I learned a lot watching my old man fix things …..
Neelie Nodnoc Yes will miss it and would like to thank the previous owners for all the help and free advice over the years. Any idea what’s going to happen to the building.
Iain Fogg Sad for the town centre as it was another reason to go into Sale and use the other shops and cafes. Will probably go to Altrincham instead now as there’s more going on and it’s easier to get home now they’ve sorted out the Park Rd junction.
Richard Ahern Shame – a really good store -always used it when I needed diy stuff. Will be sadly missed
Amanda Jayne Dillon Why is this happening! This shop is an institution and should be protected. My other half will be absolutely gutted! He loves everything about this little business, the service, the fact it has all those knick knacks nobody else sells and even the ‘smell’ of a traditional tool shop… A mix of wood, oil and metal ? Such a great shame…. Can anything be done by the community?????
Susan Hasson Very sad, has always been there, a great store, will miss itm am so sad to see it close.
Christine Brundrett So sad. Been a boon. Thanks for being there lol this time.
Christine SandhamSad to hear this. Big part of living in Sale.
..
For many years the store was owned by the Simpson family in Sale, but once they retired Jacks was sold on as a going concern.
The store officially closed yesterday. It is not clear what the new owners intend to do with the site in the future.
