A helicopter and a number of police cars were involved in a high-speed chase that passed through parts of South Manchester, including  the wrong way down the M56 near the airport,  before ending in a crash last night.

Police in the area were alerted to concerns about a £25,000 silver BMW 2-series at around 6.30pm.

A high-speed pursuit followed and only ended when the car collided with a marked police car in Baguley, causing significant damage to the front of the BMW.

Dave Arnold tweeted a picture showing three police cars, two unmarked cars and an ambulance and said he was “stuck in traffic on Altrincham Road. Lots of undercover police too.”

A GMP spokesman said: “We were alerted to the car at around 6.30pm.

“There was a police pursuit which ended in a collision. Nobody was injured.”

The spokesman added that the car had been followed due to concerns it was “suspicious”.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
