Future of Sale Moor’s Warrener Street Car Park development is in sight…

The future of the Sale Moor  Warrener Street Car Park – is in sight.

Trafford Council’s Executive has approved a ‘preferred option” plan and that includes a new health centre, new homes and improved parking facilities .

After two years of campaigning the We Are Sale Moor Community Group have fought off plans from a major retailer to build a supermarket on the car park –  vowing it would not be of benefit to the area.

An independent feasibility study was commissioned by the council, conducted by Cushman and Wakefield, with a subsequent round of public consultation on five options.

A total of 63 responses were received as part of the consultation which indicated a mixed use scheme would be the preferred option. 

After further development of the analysis, a report has now been prepared and approved at a meeting of Trafford’s Executive group, stating a preferred option to develop the site to create a ‘mixed use’ scheme. They have approved a plan for a 460 sq metres  store, and  sixteen new homes, compromising in 8×2 bedroom apartments, and 8×3 bedroomed semi-detached houses, along with a car park for 50 public places, and also staff and residential parking.

Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Sean Anstee said: “Warrener Street car park is at the heart of the Sale Moor and is well utilised by the community however it is clear to see that there are opportunities to develop the site to better benefit and meet the needs of the local community.

“The consultation, and the knowledge and feedback we have from residents and the business community is the need for investment to encourage more people to ‘shop local’ and support independent traders in the area.  Sale Moor is thriving and is an attractive place to invest this decision takes us a step closer to creating a development that’s fitting and meets the demands of the local community.

“I am particularly pleased to have worked with the We Are Sale Moor group to get us to this stage, delivering on a promise I made to work together to find an agreeable way forward following the protests against a large supermarket development.  There is much more to do in developing options but this is a positive step in the right direction in resolving a long standing issue in Sale Moor.”

The Executive also noted the need to address the traffic flow and congestion in the area which would all need to be considered as part of any proposal.
