News Update: 16-year-old arrested and held for questioning after young father stabbed in neck

Detectives investigating the murder of a 34-year-old father in Sale Moor, have made an arrest.

The victim was named by neighbours as Michael Grimshaw.  They had tried to help him while they waited for an ambulance to arrive as he lay in the road near is house in Royton Avenue, in Sale Moor.  Police officers also administered first aid at the scene, but sadly he died later in hospital.

The incident happened at 11 pm last night when it’s thought Mr Grimshaw was trying to end a disturbance in the area.

Shocked neighbours today paid their own tributes to him. One said:”He was one in a million – always ready to help and devoted to his partner and kids. He was getting married in three weeks.”

While others turned to social media pages like Facebook to express their grief and anger.

Simon Greenhalgh said  “Such a shock to hear the news that we lost Grimmy. you were one of the kindest, most gentle guys I’ve known my whole life. So sad to lose a good guy like this. I hadn’t seen you the last few years but we will always have Gran Can 04. I hope there is justice for your family.”

Hayley Gillon said:”Can’t believe what I have just read, just awful news, my heart goes out to his family, he was just a great person, never forgotten xx”

Phil Lowe said:” What can anyone say. So sad. Make you numb.”

 

Detective Chief Inspector Estelle Mathieson, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This has been a fast moving enquiry and we have one teenager in custody but our investigation continues.

“We have had a fantastic response from the public that has provided a number of positive lines of enquiry but we still need the community’s help to find the men responsible for taking the life of this young man and leaving his child to grow up without a dad.

“Only a few hours have passed since this tragic turn of events occurred. Our thoughts are with his family at the difficult time and they continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

“I would urge anyone who either witnessed the incident itself or has information that would help us, to get in contact.

“We will always treat information with the strictest of confidence and you can pass information to us anonymously but please, do it as a matter of urgency.”
