AFirst World War hero from Old Trafford who was awarded the Victoria Cross will be honoured with a commemorative paving stone and blue plaque on Wednesday.
Charles Harry Coverdale, received the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry when he was 29 years old, and a sergeant in the 11th Battalion, The Manchester Regiment. He won it for his bravery in battle close to Poelcapelle in Belgium in 1917.
A blue plaque, recognising his achievements, will be unveiled by his family at the Limelight building on Shrewsbury Street at 11am on Wednesday. Then in a special ceremony at 2pm he will receive a commemorative paving stone in the Memorial Gardens at Trafford Town Hall. Both events are open to members of the public.
Sgt. Coverdale is one of three soldiers from the borough to be awarded the Victoria Cross; the other recipients were Captain Edward Bradbury from Bowdon and Acting Lieutenant Colonel, James Marshall from Stretford. A commemorative event has already been held for Ct. Bradbury, while Lt. Col Marshall will receive his honour next year.
