The coroner holding the inquest into Caspar Blackburn’s death, said that poor lighting on the stretch of canal bank outside the Slug and Lettuce pub, could have led to the twenty-two-year-old, falling into the Bridgewater Canal.
Rachel Galloway, the coroner at Stockport Coroners Court, is writing to Trafford Council,Peel Holdings, and the Canal and River Trust, according to the Manchester Evening News with recommendations for better lighting to be installed. She recorded a verdict of accidental death.
Caspar vanished after a night out with friends in Sale on October 1st last year.
Hundreds of people in Sale and the South Trafford area were involved in the search for Caspar, who was last seen leaving the Slug and Lettuce shortly after 2 am.. Special police underwater teams assisted and eventually Caspar’s body was found in the canal, near to Springfield Primary School.
The coroner said that it appeared Caspar either stumbled into the canal, or did not see the water’s edge due to the level of darkness and drowned.
