Police have issued an urgent warning for people to beware of a man knocking on doors in the area and asking to buy gold on the doorstep.

A spokesman for GMP said:” Reports have been received about a man knocking on doors asking to buy gold. He says he is authorised by Trading Standards to cold call.

“This is NOT true as Trading Standards will NEVER authorise doorstep selling of any kind.”

The man was reported to the police after knocking on a woman’s house. When the woman said she didn’t have any gold, the man left a plain white envelope with her which he collected ten minutes later. When repeated that she didn’t have any gold, the man became agitated, took the envelope and left.

‘The man is described as being; a white male, 55-60 yrs old, 5’7″,mid brown hair with a local accent. He was wearing trousers and sports jacket and carried what looked like an ID badge on a cord round his neck. He kept his hand over this badge so the resident could not be read it,” said the spokesman.

‘Our advice is to report suspicious callers on 101 or in an emergency dial 999.

“Please share this information with friends, relatives and neighbours – especially the more vulnerable among us.”
