T he future of the former Trafford Magistrates’ Court building has finally been decided.

The building which has stood empty since 2016 has been bought by Trafford Council which will use the site for housing.

A spokeswoman for the council says the former courthouse on Washway Road,  is a key re-development opportunity in the town.  She said  the housing which will eventally stand on the site will be the type of housing the people of the town really need. Proposals on that are now being worked on.

The site has been acquired as part of the Council’s investment strategy.  They hope that while providing much needed housing  the successful scheme will generate money that will be put back into the council coffers.

We have asked the council how much of the proposed site will be given over to properties which come under the affordable homes scheme.

There has been criticism of recent projects which have  eventually gone on the market at prices outside the financial grasp of many people from Sale, who want to get on to the housing ladder.   We will bring you any comment on that, when we get it.

The announcement about the court site comes just weeks after an ambitious planning application(above) to transform Sale town centre which includes 30,000 sq ft of new leisure and retail space, a six-screen cinema, and 202 homes, was submitted.

Cllr James Wright, Executive Member for Investment, Regeneration and Strategic Planning, said: “The magistrates’ court is another excellent investment opportunity, generating a financial return which will be used to support our front line services.

“We are delighted to have been able to secure this site, which is a mark of our determination to continue regenerating the borough’s town centres. There is now a fantastic opportunity to create a residentially-led development that will increase footfall and spend in the town centre, as well as providing quality homes in a very desirable location.”

So gives us your thoughts?  It’s a bit of an eyesore at the moment, but what kind of housing should be located there?
