Sale Library to broadcast live to the UK on World Book Day

Reading with grandparents is just one of the schemes to benefit

BBC Learning will broadcast from Coppice Avenue Library in Sale for its World Book Day Live Lesson on Thursday 7th March.

Former Children’s Laureate, Malorie Blackman, Cressida Cowell, author of How to Train Your Dragon, and this year’s World Book Day illustrator, creator of Blown Away, Rob Biddulph will all feature in the broadcast.

BBC Teach Live Lessons are live, interactive 35-40 minute programmes for schools designed to support teachers and make learning fun. The target audience is schools, but anyone can take part by accessing a live stream on the BBC Learning website at the specified day and time.

The event is set to feature a presenter with a small group of children having an adventure as they work their way around a real library. The storyline is that the fictional Anti-Word League has ‘captured’ the three famous authors and turned them into World Book Day bookmark characters. The BBC’s team of book detectives will move through the library ‘rescuing’ the authors by performing fun reading challenges and interviewing the real authors once ‘released’.

Teachers and their pupils can take part for free online at bbc.com/live lessons and share their work via email and social media. Live Lessons are available on BBC iPlayer for 30 days, and an edited version is published on the BBC Learning website to be used again as a teaching resource. With each Live Lesson the BBC will also film a related panel discussion for teachers, offering subject-related teaching tips and advice.

The 40-minute live broadcast will take place at 2pm and the library will be closed to the public until about 3pm.

Cllr Kevin Procter, Trafford Council Executive Member for Communities and Housing, said: “Here in Trafford we love our libraries and World Book Day is always a huge event for us. I am delighted that  Coppice Avenue Library has been selected to host the World Book Day Live Lesson and hope everyone enjoys what promises to be a fantastic event.”

Kirsten Grant, Director, World Book Day said: “World Book Day are thrilled to be partnering with BBC Teach Live Lessons for the first time to create an exciting resource for schools to watch as part of their World Book Day celebrations. We are hugely grateful to our wonderful authors and illustrators, Cressida, Malorie and Rob – and to the BBC and Coppice Avenue Library for this fantastic opportunity to take our Share a Story message to as many schools and children as possible.”
