A mum from Sale has launched a baby and toddler group after she was left ‘devastated’ by other similar groups closing for lockdown and never reopening.

Helen Lord (pictured centre above), alongside a group of generous volunteers at the not-for-profit group, has been working hard to get the Sunbeams Sale West community-run playgroup up and running. The first session welcomed 15 babies and toddlers.

Helen, who lives on the Sale West estate, said: “I was devastated to find out the baby group I’d previously attended had stopped due to lockdown and never returned. The group was a lifeline for me and there are many families missing out on such an important group for babies, young children and their carers.”

“I felt this was a much-needed group after attending it myself with my young children and especially after COVID when people haven’t had access to these groups. They are needed for babies, toddlers and their parents and carers to meet other local families and connect with the community and to find out about other local services.”

The group received donations from local supermarkets after securing a community grant through Our Sale West to hire a space and buy initial items.

Helen said, “Without donations from local businesses, including the free book shop in Sale town centre, we wouldn’t have been able to get started so quickly.”

Volunteers have collected a number of donated items and Helen is running the Manchester 10k this weekend to raise additional funds for the playgroup, to ensure its longevity.

Sunbeams Sale West’s stay and play is suitable for children from birth to three years and costs £2 per family.
