Vintage programme tackles history of women’s football

The Local Studies team at Trafford Council has created the 24-page booklet, to coincide with the UEFA Women’s Euros taking place.

It covers the history of women’s football in Trafford and contains a wealth of information about the women’s game, how it developed, was banned by the FA and then given a new lease of life.

Stories about teams, players and matches in the area are brought to life, with fascinating pictures from different eras adding colour.

Plus, there are even a few puzzles at the back of the booklet to keep the younger generation entertained. 

Councillor Jo Harding, Trafford Council’s executive member for culture, leisure and strategic partnerships, said: “Looking back is always a great way to see where we need to go in the future.

“This booklet is a fascinating read and shows how far women’s football has come. There’s still a long way to go but the Women’s Euros can provide a real impetus to boost women’s sport even further.”

During the Euros, a full programme of arts and heritage activities is underway. The programme will both celebrate and explore the rich history of the women’s game.

Through a series of arts and heritage events, it will bring the worlds of sport and art together in a national celebration.

Councillor Harding added: “It’s important that we pay tribute to the pioneers of yesteryear and all they have done to make today’s game so exciting. They have paved the way for today’s stars like Ella Toone and I’m so excited at how they are inspiring the next generation of youngsters.

“The Local Studies team have unearthed some amazing stories and pictures and I would urge everyone to go and have a look.”
