A man has been jailed for 46 weeks after being caught carrying a knife in Altrincham earlier this week.
Josh Thomas, 18, of Epsom Avenue in Sale, was stopped in Altrincham town centre on Sunday (21st August) and arrested.
Police were able to stop Thomas using additional stop-search powers, granted under Section 60, which allows officers to conduct ‘no suspicion’ stop and searches for offensive weapons.
These temporary powers were put in place following the stabbing of Rico Burton in Altrincham’s Goose Green area last weekend.
In a statement released on social media regarding the conviction of Josh Thomas, Greater Manchester Police said:
“Our priority is to keep you safe. We use these powers to prevent violence involving weapons.”
