There have been so many requests to hold vigils for the victims of the Manchester concert attack in the Trafford area, that there will now be one official event.
Trafford Borough Council, it’s partnership organisations and Greater Manchester Police hope that the event on Bank Holiday Monday will be attended by people from throughout the area, rather than several smaller ones be held, stretching already overworked resources.
A statement on the the council’s website says:”Trafford’s partnership organisations are aware that people want to come together at this sad time and express their support or grief publically for the devastating event that occurred in Manchester on Monday evening.
“The vigil, for families, friends, staff, partners and all will be held on Monday 29 May at 4pm in the Sunken Gardens at Trafford Town Hall, Talbot Road, Stretford, M32 0TH.
“A number of approaches have been made to Trafford Council and its partners to host vigils and the Council and GMP feels that one event for people to attend will bring the community together and are urging those who wish to attend are signposted to attend this official event.
“The event is open to everyone, whether you live in Trafford or not. The short event will consist of messages from local leaders and the young people of our borough.”
The statement goes on:”Guests are also advised that there is no parking available on site however the Town Hall is fully accessible via public transport and is opposite The Old Trafford Metrolink station.
“As we are at ‘Critical’ level nationally and with the major events taking place in our city and Trafford this weekend, holding mass gatherings will only increase pressure on police resources and we advise against the organisation of these events.”
Those who attend are being discouraged from taking flowers and candles and are asked to donate to the Red Cross Recovery Fund instead at: http://www.redcross.org.uk/en/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Manchester-Emergency-Fund
