Police have released video of the moment the grenade found in the canal at Brooklands  was blown up.

Bomb squad officers carried out a controlled explosion on the device which was found on the banks of the Bridgewater canal yesterday.  The pictures released just now by the police show how lucky the person was who fished out the live grenade with a magnet.

The Metrolink station was closed for some time and a 30 metre cordon put in place disrupting traffic around the Brooklands/ Marsland road junction as the bomb quad was called to the scene..

The cordon extended from the Metrolink on Marsland Road,  to Hope Road and Brooklands Road itself.

Metrolink services were also affected with none able to stop at Brooklands, however trams were passing through.

A spokesman for GMP said: “We were called at 7.20am to a suspect historic grenade.

” There are a number of road closures and precautions in place while an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team assessment is made.”

But they were later to say the incident was over after the controlled explosion.

“There has now been a controlled explosion and the grenade ‘was live’. Lucky member of the public that it didn’t explode whilst he fished it out of the canal!,” they said.
Do you know who the lucky person was who pulled out the grenade? We would love to talk to them about it.  If you can help us please email sale@hyperlocaltoday.co.uk.
