S ale’s two golf clubs are reopening tomorrow (Wednesday) with strict guidelines for players.

Both Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club and Sale Golf Club are limiting use of the course to members only initially meaning no guests or visitors are allowed.

The two clubs have been closed for the last seven weeks during lockdown costing them vital revenue at what should be a busy time of year.

Guidelines mean players can only play in two-balls and the clubhouses will remain closed until further notice. It will be social golf only with no competitions allowed until circumstances change.

The clubs have held emergency meetings over the last 24 hours following the latest government advice.

Players at Ashton-on-Mersey will only be allowed to play nine holes per visit. Sale is allowing two rounds per week on its 18-hole course initially.

Sale’s Honorary Secretary Simon Poucher said: “Our membership has been most supportive during this difficult time, even though some have lost jobs and have been furloughed by their employers.

“We will continue to review the situation, depending on the initial uptake for playing golf and any change in government guidelines. We had a lot of bad weather before lockdown and some of our members haven’t played golf since before Christmas and are keen to play.”

Ashton Honorary Secretary Terry Hughes and captain Gary Denman told members: “After a great deal of hard work by a number of members, we’re pleased to tell you that the golf club will be open from 8 am on Wednesday, May 13.

“It’s imperative members adhere to the rules and we thank them for their support and patience during this unprecedented time.”

All flag sticks must remain in holes which will be inverted to prevent the ball going below ground. Bins and ball washers cannot be used and bunker rakes removed. Players should use their club or feet to smooth over sand.

Players should leave the course as soon as they have finished and once clubs have been taken from lockers they should be stored at home.
