First birthday celebrations for Sale Moor zero waste store

Fantastic - No Plastic self-serve

A unique zero waste shop in Sale Moor that is helping to clean up the planet celebrates its first birthday this month.

Fantastic – No Plastic – a plastic-free refill shop – was launched in Sale Moor village in May last year by Rebecca Whiteside.

The store aims to help Sale residents to shop more sustainably and after a year of business, it’s likely that customers have saved thousands of pieces of plastic from ending up in landfill or our oceans.

Rebecca has a passion for protecting the planet and since opening the doors to Fantastic – No Plastic has been urging others to think along the same lines.

How does Fantastic – No Plastic work?

The shop offers refills for body care, cleaning, herbs, spices, pasta, rice, nuts and a lot more.

Customers bring their own bottles and containers (or buy them in-store), which reduces plastic use and the shop also stocks a range of plastic-free alternatives to everyday items such as washing up sponges and toothbrushes.

In addition, it also stocks items from local businesses such as Lucky Bee Gin, cheese and crackers, all in plastic-free compostable packaging.

Despite the challenges that come with opening a new business, Rebecca is happy with the shop’s first year.

“It’s going well and I can’t believe how much progress we’ve made so far,” she said.

“Local people have been coming in and we have lots of regulars. It’s great being in the village and getting support from the community.

“In the next few months, I’d love to reach more new customers, they should just pop in and see what we have to offer, I think they’d be impressed by the selection we have available.”

Rebecca is always increasing the range of products available and it’s clear that she has packed a lot into the shop space so far.

No waste – ideal for those on a budget

An affordable zero waste shop is important to those on a budget, particularly given the current cost of living crisis, according to Rebecca.

“In the past few months I’ve noticed that more customers are using us to budget, they are only buying what they need at an affordable cost,” she said.

“That’s good for the customers’ pockets and it’s good for the planet. They can come in and get exactly what they want, reducing waste.”

Rebecca’s passion for local products, supporting the local economy and considering smarter shopping as a way of reducing food miles and wastage is clear.
